Both of the EQ and the dynamics adjustments are shown as appealing graphical curves, and when a band is enabled, the EQ curve becomes interactive, allowing you to move the band's corner frequencies around with your finger or pinch to change the bandwidth. Almost all of the functionality you're likely to want is only a few taps away: tapping the cogwheel symbol at the top of any channel brings up distinct Equalisation, Channel Settings, Dynamics, and Sends pages for that channel, all of which are customizable. Mixer channels in Touch Console view elegantly resize to match the size and orientation of your device's screen, saving you from the sluggish and juddery scrolling that would otherwise be your lot, and if you're quick enough, you can manipulate several controllers at the same time. The Touch Console view adds no functionality that wasn't already available in the earlier mixer view, but it's a lot more comfortable to use, especially on a mobile device. Like the current mixer views, Touch Console is provided over Wi-Fi from your computer to compatible devices on the same network that accesses the 828 via the MOTU AVB Discovery app. This is optimized for operating the mixer from touchscreen devices such as tablets and phones however, it is also available on PCs. MOTU has released updated firmware for their AVB devices that offer a new mixing view called Touch Console. The rear panel of the 828es has an IEC mains word clock, socket, optical and S/PDIF I/O, RJ45, USB, and Thunderbolt connections, eight quarter-inch analog inputs and outputs, timecode I/O ports, MIDI I/O ports, two sends, and main outputs on XLR connectors. On the other hand, it is complicated, potentially scary to some, and the browser-based interface can be slow to respond, particularly when navigating between various windows. In short, this digital mixer is incredibly extensive and is as bit as powerful as many dedicated hardware mixers in terms of functionality. These interfaces appear to be similar internally thus, the 828es, like the 1248, have a massively powerful digital mixer with up to 48 inputs and extensive mixing, routing, and signal processing capabilities. So, unlike earlier 828s, which came with a control-panel tool called CueMix, the 828es' internal DSP is managed via a Web browser, just like other MOTU AVB interfaces like 1248, 16A, 8M, etc. The 828es is not just a descendant of the 828, but it is also a member of MOTU's AVB line, which means it can be used in an IEEE 802.1 AVB/TSN networked audio system. In reality, the only socket that the 828es has acquired over the 828x is an RJ45, although this is a little hint that things are different under the hood.
